For January, we will have our fly out to Tacoma Narrows for some pizza at The Hub. It will be dark, so make sure someone in the plane will be night current, and enjoy the flight to the Puget Sound. They make a great pizza, and for the person not flying back, they do serve local beers as well. The flight there can be very beautiful at night, flying over PDX, along I5 to Olympia, and across the sound with the Seattle area in view.

We are excited to have Kristi from the Salem Tower join us for this year’s meeting with the Tower at Sizzler. Kristi will be there to introduce herself and to have a general Q&A session. This is a great opportunity to continue to strengthen our relationship with the tower, to learn how we can work better with the tower, and to make sure we are doing what they want to make the airspace a friendly and safe place. Kristi is looking forward to finally getting to meet the many people that she talks with on the radio! This is highly recommended for everyone. Please RSVP to Isaac so he can estimate the seats needed.

The destination for Saturday is Crescent Lake (5S2). The weather is looking good for the weekend, so assuming no T-storms or high winds, Saturday should be a nice day for a trip across the mountains. We'll depart KSLE at 9:00 am so that we can get an early afternoon departure from 5S2 to beat the heat and possible density altitude. There are a couple of food options near 5S2 so we'll grab a bite and in case they aren't operating bring a snack just in case.

The Reno Air Races are back! We did a club fly out in 2019 to KRNO so let’s do it again. We’re planning on departing Tuesday September 14th early in the morning and attending the races the next day (15th) which is the first practice/qualifying day and is typically less crowded. We’ll return on Friday the 17th which lets you take in a second air race day on the 16th or use that day to relax in Reno. As of now there are only two hotels on the race shuttle route (Eldorado and Nugget) and both are competitive in price. If you are time constrained or want to get there on your own, Alaska was quoting $180-$238 from PDX (as of 7/5/2021).

Fri08Oct202111:00 amKSLE-KEUG
Saturday October 30th, we’ll be visiting the Oregon Air and Space Museum which is located on the airport at KEUG. If you haven’t landed at KEUG before, this is great time to experience a somewhat larger and busier airport which has more complicated taxi routes than does KSLE. The museum, though small, has some interesting exhibits and the $7 admission goes to help the curators maintain some aviation and space artifacts for the enjoyment of non-aviation folks. The museum doesn’t open until 12:00, so we’ll plan to depart KSLE at 11:15.

Haven’t flown at night in a while? Want to get some additional night experience or regain your night passenger currency? Join us Saturday night, November 20th, for some night takeoffs and landings. We’ll have several club instructors on hand to fly with up to two pilots in the 172’s for some night dual. The tentative plan is to fly to a nearby destination (e.g. KMMV, S12, etc.) and get three landings, then switch pilots and fly to another airport for three landings.
Sunset for the 20th is at 16:35 so an hour after that we’ll launch after a short night safety briefing. Plan to arrive at 16:30 to pre-flight while it’s still light outside. Afterwards for those interested, we’ll go to the Flight Deck restaurant for flying talk and food. The instructor cost will be $25 per pilot and each pilot is responsible for paying for their aircraft time (estimated .5 hour). Please RSVP to Todd Lindley (via Flight Circle) by November 13th as space is limited.

If you aren’t a camper feel free to book a local B&B or fly-up early Saturday or Sunday morning for the day. If the San Juan Islands are on your flying destination bucket list, now is your opportunity to join in on the fun.

Joan and Vern have graciously agreed to host the party, starting at 6:00 PM on Saturday, December 10th. In order to have enough food for everyone, each member is asked to bring either a main dish or salad, and a small dessert to share. The club will provide meat and some fixings. We’ll also do a gift exchange, so bring a fun gift in the $10-20 range (aviation gifts are always fun). Bring your family or friends for a fun evening together.
This is a great time to see old friends and to meet some of our newer members. Please RSVP to Isaac by December 3th so that we can get the plans finalized and seating appropriately spaced. Also, please let Isaac know if you can volunteer to help clean up after the party. Feel free to text or email Isaac or Joan if you have questions. -
Wed25Jan20236:00 pmLa Margarita Express (515 Chemeketa Street NE, Salem, OR)
It’s almost time for our annual club meeting to cover general business and officer elections. Over dinner, we’ll have a chance to meet the many new members that joined this year, provide an overall update on the club and our financials, discuss what we’ve accomplished over the last year, hold officer elections, discuss plans for the future, and discuss other business that you wish to bring up.
The Vice-President and Secretary positions expire in January, so elections will be held for these positions. If you have interest in serving on the Board, please contact any of the board members for more information on these positions: Isaac Mosgrove (President), Simon Hayes (Vice-President), Joan Johnson (Treasurer), Alan Lasneski (Secretary), Al Gray (Safety & Maintenance), Chris Eriksson (Chief Pilot).
If you know of special topics, proposals, or concerns that you’d like to discuss, please contact Isaac so that we can be sure that they are on the agenda. We look forward to recapping the accomplishments of this past year and to look ahead to further improvements for the future. This year’s meeting will be at 6:00 pm, Wednesday, January 25th at La Margarita Express, 515 Chemeketa St NE (members pay for their own orders). -

Has it been a while since you have flown at night? Want to get some additional night experience or bring your night passenger currency current? Depending on the weather we will either stay local or fly someplace within 50-100 miles and grab a crew car or local transportation to a nearby restaurant. Possible destinations could include KONP, KHIO, KCLS, or KEUG. If we must stay local, we will fly to S12 and walk to the grille at the North end of the airport. Either way we’ll get three full stop landings completed. Reserve Friday February 10th and Saturday February 11th as a backup. Plan for an 18:00 departure.

It’s not Oshkosh or Sun ’n Fun, but a fun event to walk around and talk with aviation vendors (and get free swag). There are also several aviation accessory vendors on site so if you need to update any of your pilot accessories, those can usually be had at a discount. The plan is to fly into Pierce County Airport (KPLU) on Saturday or Sunday based on the best weather day and take the FBO shuttle over to the event.

On Saturday March 18th, we’ll fly to KVUO and walk across the airport property to the Pearson Air Museum to view some early 20th century aviation artifacts and other flying machines. Afterwards, there are a few lunch options within a 20-minute walk of the airport. The challenging aspect of getting into Pearson Field is that the KPDX class ’C’ airspace sits just above the traffic pattern altitude at KVUO, and the airport is governed by special air traffic rules part 93. Be sure to brush up on your ATC radio work and review CFR 93.161-163.

It has been a few years since we’ve been able to have dinner with the Salem Tower, and we are excited to get to reinstate this annual event. Don Conrad from Salem ATC will be joining us on March 21st for dinner at 6:00 pm at Lum-Yuen Restaurant (3190 Portland Rd NE). Don will be there to introduce himself and to have a general Q&A session. This is a great opportunity to continue to strengthen our relationship with the tower, to learn how we can work better with the tower, and to make sure we are doing what they want to make the airspace a friendly and safe place. The tower is looking forward to finally getting to meet the many people that they talk with on the radio!
This is highly recommended for everyone. Please RSVP to Isaac so he can estimate the seats needed. -
